A helper based on the zakat rules published by Egypt's Dar al-Ifta and Bait al-Zakat wal-Sadaqat, not a fatwa. If your case has details (long instalments, a gameya, inheritance, trade, money received mid-year), ask Dar al-Ifta: 107 from any phone in Egypt, +20 2 25970400 from abroad, or dar-alifta.org. How it is calculated

Zakat on money is 2.5% (a quarter of a tenth) of your wealth, provided it has reached the nisab, a full hijri year (about 354 days) has passed over it, and it is beyond your basic needs and those of the people you support.

What is the nisab?

In Egypt, following Dar al-Ifta, Bait al-Zakat and Al-Azhar, the nisab is the value of 85 grams of 21-karat gold. There is no fixed amount in pounds because the gold price changes every day: type today's 21K price and the calculator multiplies it by 85.

What counts

FAQ

What is the nisab of zakat in Egypt in 2026?

The value of 85 grams of 21-karat gold on the day you pay. At a hypothetical EGP 6,000 a gram it would be EGP 510,000; type today's price for the real figure.

Is zakat due on worn gold jewellery?

In Dar al-Ifta's view, no: jewellery a woman wears for adornment is not zakatable. Gold kept as savings (bars, pounds) is.

Is zakat due on savings certificates?

Yes, on the principal and on returns you still hold on your zakat date, at 2.5%, once your total wealth is above the nisab.

Hijri or solar year?

2.5% for a hijri year. If you count by the solar year, Dar al-Ifta's fatwa uses 2.577% because the solar year is about 11 days longer.
